Motivational Secrets: Finding Your True Motive

The essence of the word ‘Motivation’ is ‘Motive’. This means reason, cause, basis, grounds, rationale or that which drives us toward a desired objective. Motivation comes from within but can be enhanced by sensory perception. We often need motivation when we have lost sight of our motives. Or when our motive isn’t strong enough… or when the motive isn’t right for us…

Consider ‘getting a pay rise’ as a goal for instance. What could be one’s motive for a pay rise? There could be several: new clothes, new car, a bigger house, a forthcoming wedding, prestige, inflation costs, ambition or plain old fashioned greed. But which is it? We may never know what truly motivates other people but by digging deep we can discover what motivates us.

There are generic motives and there’s a pure motive for everything we do. True, one can have more than one motive, but always there’s a motive deeper and stronger than all the others are. For instance, if your real motive for wanting a pay rise is a desire to impress others, then there is no need sticking ‘wedding planner post-it notes’ all over your fridge because your inner mind will never be deceived. One might say an incentive for getting a pay rise is money. But again, this is a generic reason. It is much more effective to focus on what you need the money for e.g. helping the needy, buying a new house or paying for a dream holiday.

You will never feel sufficiently motivated until you establish what your deepest motives are. The key to feeling constantly motivated is defining why you want to do whatever it is you want to do, or whatever it is you want to keep doing. Once your core motive has been defined, focus on it, explore it, discuss it, think on it, respect it and your energy and passion will flourish.
